Comunity Service

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. -Margaret Mead

Community service is a very important component of the TSA experience. Students in TSA are actively involved in community service projects on a regular basis.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF

UNICEF is a program of the United Nations system whose task is to help children living in poverty in developing countries. UNICEF was established on December 11, 1946 by the United Nations to meet the emergency needs of children in post-war Europe and China. Over the past 55 years, millions of American kids, schools, parents and partner organizations involved in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF have raised more than $127 million for children in the developing world.

UNICEF is a great example of making a little go a long way:

  • 3¢ can supply a dose of vitamin A to boost a child's immune system and prevent blindness.
  • 5¢ can provide enough iodized salt to prevent stunted physical and mental growth in a child for one year.
  • 30¢ provides lifesaving antibiotics for a child suffering from pneumonia.
  • $1 can immunize a child against polio for life, protecting him or her against the disease and preventing its spread to nearby communities.
  • $2 can buy a nutritional kit for a severely malnourished child. The kit includes basic food supplements that will tide the child over until appropriate food aid can be supplied.
  • $3.75 can provide educational materials for a child for one year, including a portion of the cost of teacher supplies. Materials include books, pencils, a school bag, slate board, chalk, posters, rulers, safety scissors and notebooks.
  • $10 provides enough high-protein biscuits to feed three hungry children for one month.
  • $20 can buy purification tablets to clean 104 gallons of water that would otherwise cause disease.
  • $150 pays for a small well to provide clean water for an entire village.
  • $250 can provide a tent for a family whose one has been destroyed during an emergency, such as an earthquake or a civil war.

Penny War

A favorite activity is the Penny War. During this event, classes compete against each other to raise the most money for a local charity. Each class is given a collection container. Students receive one point for each penny placed in the jar. Students may put other coins and paper currency into the containers of OTHER classes. Each silver coin or bill reduces the number of points from that container by the amount of the coin. (e.g., a nickel reduces the points by five, a dime by ten, a dollar by 100, etc...) This results in a lot of friendly competition between classes.

Teacher Appreciation Day

The students in TSA make a special effort to remember the teachers at ACT during Career and Technical Education Week in February. We are lucky to have many well-educated and highly-qualified instructors at our school and welcome the opportunity to show our appreciation.
